Art for me is a passion, not just a career route; I think it is an important factor to love the subject your working in to become a successful entrepreneur. I am currently studying UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design, throughout the course I have focused on identity in majority of my projects. I'm currently on my major final project and a big part of my identity right now is my pregnancy so this is something I have chosen to focus on, naming my project bump to baby. Inspired by a blind life casting artist named Sharon McConnell-Dickerson I am going to incorporate life casting into the pieces of my final exhibition.
I like to work with hands on medias such as acrylic paint, clay and craft materials. Within my major final project last year, I experimented with craft materials and turned medias such as glitter, buttons and rhinestones into an art piece of a tiger’s eye. My favourite media to work with was the rhinestones they were easy to manipulate and move around to where I wanted them, also being able to purchase them in all different colours and sizes helped me to gain finer details within the piece. This was only a small test piece for media experiments, but it is a piece that I am proud of as well as my main final piece for that project of a large acrylic painting of a pair of tiger eyes.
Another piece of work I am proud of is a visual studies piece, it originated from a life drawing session where I completed an A1 chalk drawing of a life model laid down. I was then asked to choose one of my pieces of work from the unit and manipulate it into a final piece depicting movement. I chose this piece of work, painted a duck egg blue emulsion over the whole of a recycled wooden board; then using masking tape I drew out the outlines and key features of this drawing. When finished I used different shades of red, pink and purple to swipe random streaks of paint all over the piece which showed movement, I then removed all of the masking tape which also pulled off some of the emulsion revealing the image in a blue / white textured outline. It is one of my favourite pieces to date.
Outside of college I like to spend time with my family, going out for dinner is something we do often whether it be at a local pub/restaurant or at one of our houses; gathering round a table, chatting and eating food is what we like to do. I also like to go on shopping trips with my friends, family or my partner; our home town has a nice shopping centre, but going out of town to Hull, Doncaster, Sheffield etc. is more exciting. It's great to see other towns and their local shops that we don’t have here in Grimsby. We also like to visit places when we go out of town, in Hull we have been to places like The Deep, Streetlife Museum, and Wings International Cuisine. We’ve also been to Doncaster Dome, Meadow Hall and Ingoldmells, of course finding restaurants that we don’t have at home like Nando’s, Frankie and Benny’s and Five Guys. Another thing I like to do is home crafts, I have a little boy on the way so making little personalised things like dummy clips, pram charms, frames and photo albums is something I'm enjoying at the minute. I have also created book arts for my family which is where you cut and fold the individual pages to make a pattern in the book; one of my books had my Great-Grandfathers face in it as a gift for my Nan.
I have a lot of positive key attributes to my character and personality that would make me a good employee. My communication skills are exceptional, I can communicate clearly and effectively in many different mediums including verbally, written and body language. I also have great listening skills which allow me to follow directions clearly and provide feedback if needed. I am honest and loyal in all situations, I'm not afraid to admit if I have made a mistake, I will bring it to the relevant persons attention, take it on board and learn from it. I am also responsible enough to know that when working for a company, you represent that company wherever you go, this means having a professional approach publicly out of hours, as well as in. I work well both individually and, in a team, I will take on any task given to hand with strive to complete it to the best of my abilities. My work ethic is up to standards, I like to be early to work to prep myself for the day enabling me to start my job role at the very start of the shift time. I have patience, determination and persistence which allows me to take on any obstacle or difficult situation and gain a positive outcome; it also allows me to excel at the position I'm working at which could potentially lead to bigger opportunities. I'm always eager to expand my knowledge, I believe there is always room to improve and learn new things. My aspirations for the future are to become self-employed, becoming a successful entrepreneur and business owner.
