  • Why is it a good idea to keep the work in your portfolio broad in terms of imagery, subject matter, mediums and processes?

It is good to do this as it shows the viewer of the portfolio, whether it be an interviewer for a job or an education opportunity, the range of work you can do. It helps you to showcase your talent and impress the person you are presenting your portfolio to.

  • Are written explanations or descriptive labels which inform us about the nature of the work necessary?

They are not necessary, but if you wish to include them in your portfolio they should be kept short and clear.

  • As a creative person, what is the function of a portfolio of work?

The function of a portfolio of work is to display and showcase your work in order to inform an employer or university of your skills within your specialist area. It is a presentation of you and your work.

  • Why should extra care be taken when assembling your portfolio? Comment on the selection of the work, how it is arranged and ordered, and the final presentation of the pieces.

Extra care should be taken when assembling your portfolio as you don’t want to overload it with the same type of work, a good balance of different skills should be displayed in order to gain maximum impact from the employer/university.

  • How many pieces of work should you include in a portfolio?

Around 20-25 pieces of work should be included in a portfolio.

  • Are there any set rules as to how you should present individual pieces of work or how they should be ordered within your portfolio?

You should present your individual pieces professionally; photographs of your work should be cropped and lit, backdrops should be kept suitable avoiding any colours that dull or yellow the colours in your work. Your work should be ordered accordingly into themes and projects; they should tell a story of your progression so far.

  • Why is it useful to assemble both a digital and traditional portfolio?

It is useful to assemble both as every employer / university is different, some many ask you submit your portfolio online, others may ask you to bring one with you, you may also get asked both. It is important to be prepared.

  • Should your portfolio include only final pieces or are developmental pieces just as important?

Developmental pieces are just as important as final pieces.

  • Should your portfolio be tailored to suit the specific requirements and needs of the university or work placement you are applying for? If so, state why.

It should be tailored slightly as you still want to show the range of work and skills that you have but a lot of it will need to relate to the position / course you are applying for in order for it to be relevant towards the employer / university.

  • What use will your portfolio have to you, in the years after you have completed your current college course?

In the years after my current college course, my portfolio will be use to me if I decide to move on to a creative course at university, or into a creative career.
